The pandemic has changed a lot in fashion. The Met Gala, considered the super bowl of fashion, was canceled last year and I can say I was not the only one who was disappointed. Every year, I am always glued to my TV watching the red carpet on E! to see what the celebrities are wearing. This year’s theme was “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” or more simply, a celebration and history of American fashion and designers. It’s always interesting to see how celebrities interpret the theme.
This year was a little different though. The MTV video music awards were the night before, and the Emmys are next week. Unusually, there are so many red carpets one after another. Since the Met Gala and VMAs were so close, I compared celebrities’ looks since they are such different events. The Met Gala is fashion’s most prominent and most expensive night. Attendees are expected to dress to the theme and often arrive in custom-made, high-end couture and gowns. The VMAs, however, are very different. It’s more casual, and celebrities that attend often dress cool or more abstract. You will more likely see pants than gowns on the carpet.

Love the Message!… Not So Much the Look…
The Met Gala is a place where attendees like to make statements. This year, the theme being American Fashion, of course some celebrities’ were bound to make political statements. Other than Nikki de Jagger’s dress (that paid homage to Trans activist Marsha P. Johnson) , I didn’t really like the other politicly ensembles. Don’t get me wrong I love the message which is why they deserve an honorable mention. I just feel that they look could have been executed better which is why they did not make my list of favorites.

Overall I was a little disappointed with the Met Gala this year. Maybe its coved or maybe attendees just didn’t know how to interpret the theme. But the theme was American fashion and designers so why wouldn’t everyone show up in American designers? One thing I have noticed is men stepping up their game. Gender and fashion are finally going back to being more fluid. As societal norms for gender are changing so is fashion. Men are straying away from boring suits and tuxedos and opting for colors, statement-making garments, and dresses and skirts. And I love it! What were your favorite looks from the Met Gala or VMAs? Let me know!
